EMAIL 3: Gail - a cool trick for Punk

Today I'd like to show you a fun trick you can
teach Punk in no time flat.

Here it is:

"How To Teach Punk To Wave Hello"

First, start out with Punk in the SIT position.

(Note: If you're having trouble getting Punk to
SIT when you say "sit" ...and to STAY when you say
"stay", you should check out my guaranteed training

Now, with Punk sitting in front of you,
gently tickle the hairs on one of the dog's
front paws.

THIS PART IS CRUCIAL:
As soon as Punk's paw moves,
praise your dog and give a treat.

It's important to praise and reward Punk
immediately ...even if the paw just barely
moves.

Now repeat this process quickly until Punk
starts to pick up the same foot ...without 
you tickling the hairs. 

(It might take a few repetitions, but Punk
will get the hang of it.)

Next, you want to keep praising and rewarding,
Punk every time the paw comes up
...but gradually withold your praise until
Punk's paw comes up a little higher
each time.

Your goal is to have Punk's paw come up
about chest high.

...Punk's chest, that is :-)

Once Punk raises the paw to chest height
CONSISTENTLY, add the command "wave" or
"high five" just before rewarding and praising
...while the paw is in the air.

So if you were to map this out in
Punk's mind, the "timeline"
for this trick would look like this:


COMMAND ---> DESIRED BEHAVIOR ---> REWARD

It's pretty simple, really.

In fact, training a Borzoi to do
just about anything will follow that
same pattern.

IMPORTANT groundwork in order to accelerate

EMAIL 4: Gail (and Punk) - VERY IMPORTANT!

Listen, I want to warn you about something
that happens to countless Borzois ...
and should NEVER happen to Punk.

Let me tell you a story...

Anna had an 18 month old Borzoi
named Boscoe.

And like any Borzoi, Boscoe had plenty
of energy. (Especially at that age!)

Anna had a fenced in back yard, but often
kept Boscoe in the house with her when she
was at home.

Generally soeaking, Boscoe was fairly
well behaved.

Only the occasional accident.  Not too much
chewing, and he never nipped at anyone.

Boscoe *loved* to bolt out the front door

Here it is:

IGNORE THESE PEOPLE!

nice walk.
